Client: Municipality Of Mississippi Mills
The Municipality of Mississippi Mills chose us for our proven ability to deliver value, innovative engineering solutions, and strong regulatory coordination.

Project Overview
Capacity Engineering was retained by the Municipality of Mississippi Mills to provide emergency structural stabilization and controlled deconstruction engineering for a deteriorated heritage structure located along Main Street. The condition of the structure, constructed using unreinforced masonry typical of its era, posed an immediate safety risk to the public and resulted in partial road closure in a high-traffic corridor.
Our team developed stabilization strategies that allowed the municipality to safely reopen both lanes of Main Street while maintaining the necessary buffer from nearby overhead hydro infrastructure. The work required precise coordination, continuous structural evaluation, and the design of localized reinforcement measures to ensure stability during partial deconstruction of the tower section.
Given the age, heritage value, and fragility of the building, the project demanded a careful balance between safety, practicality, and preservation wherever feasible.
Why Choose Capacity Engineering?
The Municipality of Mississippi Mills selected Capacity Engineering based on:
- A strong history of working with the municipality on structural matters
- Established trust and ongoing collaboration with the Chief Building Official
- Prior experience with heritage structures and unreinforced masonry construction
- Deep familiarity with emergency response engineering and stabilization planning
- The ability to mobilize quickly and provide practical, field-ready engineering solutions
Our ability to operate effectively under public scrutiny and high-risk conditions made us the ideal partner for this assignment.
Project Outcome
To date, Capacity Engineering has delivered:
- Emergency deconstruction design for the unsafe tower section
- Localized stabilization of masonry elements to protect workers and the public
- Reinforcement detailing suitable for fragile, heritage masonry
- Safe construction staging that maintained clearance from adjacent hydro lines
- Engineering documentation required for municipal approvals
- Continuous coordination with the Chief Building Official and contractor
- Cost-efficient design options that minimized demolition scope where possible
The coordinated stabilization work allowed Main Street to reopen fully while ensuring public safety and enabling the municipality to proceed with next steps for long-term site planning.
