Integrated Systems Testing

Client: Carleton University

Carleton University chose us for our proven ability to deliver value, innovative engineering solutions, and strong regulatory coordination.

Project Overview

Capacity Engineering was retained to perform Integrated Systems Testing (IST) for the new Carleton University student residence, a multi-storey institutional building designed to accommodate a large student population. As part of the final commissioning and occupancy preparation, Carleton University, through electrical contractor C&M Electric, required a qualified, independent consultant to verify that all interconnected life safety and fire protection systems performed correctly under simulated emergency conditions.

Our team acted as the Integrated Testing Coordinator, responsible for planning, executing, and documenting all test sequences in compliance with CAN/ULC-S1001, the newly implemented standard governing integrated systems testing of fire protection and life safety systems. The work involved close coordination with multiple trades and system vendors, ensuring full functional integration between fire alarms, sprinklers, mechanical/smoke control systems, elevators, emergency power, and security systems.

By delivering a structured, transparent, and standards-driven approach, Capacity Engineering supported the successful completion and turnover of the new residence, enabling the University to prepare the building for student occupancy on schedule.

Why Choose Capacity Engineering?

Carleton University (via C&M Electric) selected Capacity Engineering based on our proven ability to deliver integrated testing on complex institutional and multi-residential projects.

Key reasons included:

- Demonstrated expertise in Integrated Systems Testing

- Deep familiarity with interconnected life safety and fire protection systems

- Ability to act independently while coordinating multiple stakeholders

- Strong working knowledge of ULC S1001 requirements and reporting standards

- Experience managing testing programs on large, multi-system buildings

- Clear documentation and communication throughout commissioning

This combination of technical capability and coordination expertise made Capacity Engineering the ideal partner for this large institutional residence project.

Project Outcome

Capacity Engineering successfully completed the integrated testing program in alignment with both project and occupancy timelines.

Highlights include:

- Development of a project-specific testing plan in accordance with CAN/ULC-S1001

- Full execution of integrated test sequences across all life safety subsystems

- Coordination with trades, including electrical, mechanical, sprinkler, elevator, and security contractors

- Real-time issue tracking and resolution to maintain commissioning momentum

- Preparation of complete S1001-compliant IST documentation for turnover
